Moomken, a local NGO dedicated to social change and empowerment

February 2024 – Moomken, a local NGO dedicated to social change and empowerment, is thrilled to announce the launch of the Deraya initiative in the southern regions of Libya.

Funded by the European Union (EU), the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in collaboration with Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), the initiative adopts an area-based strategy, targeting municipalities within the region to enhance their self-reliance and administrative capabilities to support entrepreneurship.

The Deraya initiative seeks to equip entrepreneurs in select municipalities in the South of Libya – Al-Qardah, Brak Al-Shati, Al-Sharqiyah, Sabha, Ubari, Ghat, Al Kufra, Bint Baya, and Murzuq – with the necessary tools and skills to develop innovative ideas. Tailored support and resources will be provided to each municipality to foster local ownership and empower communities to drive their own development. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, the initiative aims to create a sustainable path toward economic prosperity and social stability.

To raise awareness and engage the public, a digital campaign will be launched alongside online webinars featuring successful entrepreneurial models. The initiative will also host Start Up weekend training sessions, fostering collaboration and innovation over two days. These sessions provide participants with hands-on experience, mentorship, and networking opportunities with industry professionals and potential investors.

Targeting individuals aged 17-35, with a goal of 50% female participation, Deraya also extends support to locally displaced populations, providing opportunities for those affected by various challenges. The initiative activities will commence as follows:

- Sabha municipality: 26,27 April - 2024

- Ubari , Ghat and alqorda alshati : 3,4 May 2024

- Morzoq and Bent Baya: 10,11 May 2024

- Brak alshati , alsharqiya and alkofra: 17,18 May 2024

During the final week of May, an open invitation will be sent through communication channels for applicants who are interested in participating in the Online Hackathon, which will be a full-day event where the participants, under the guidance of mentors, will be tasked with presenting a solution to a problem within their municipalities.

Finally, a jury of experts will choose the winning presentation based on creativity, feasibility, and impact.

The initiative aims to provide future grant opportunities within the Deraya initiative, initially focusing on enriching skills and knowledge applicable to tangible ideas. This strategy ensures participants acquire valuable insights and experiences, with nomination and grant programs set to follow.

The Deraya initiative is part of UNDP’s Local Peacebuilding and Resilience Programme in partnership with MoLG, aiming to create socio-economic opportunities for youth and vulnerable groups, fostering a collaborative effort towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
